The Abia Pensioners Forum has voiced sharp criticism against the state government, alleging that officials are neglecting the needs of retirees while prioritizing payments for former local government chairmen and councillors. During a press gathering in Umuahia on Monday, the group expressed their frustration regarding the ongoing delay in receiving pension arrears and gratuities.
Coordinator Okey Kanu, acting as the spokesperson for the senior citizens, highlighted that many individuals who dedicated up to 35 years of service to the state are still waiting for their inherited financial benefits. Kanu pointed out that while these long-term public servants struggle, the administration has successfully cleared entitlements for political appointees who served only brief terms under previous governments.
The forum emphasized that the situation is becoming dire, with many elderly retirees suffering from illness or even passing away before receiving their dues. Kanu specifically reminded Governor Alex Otti of his 2023 campaign pledges, noting that these payments are essential for the survival of the elderly, covering costs for food and medication. Dismissing claims that all inherited arrears have been settled, the group affirmed that they will not relinquish their right to these earned benefits.
