Jeremias James, a 25-year-old professional footballer currently playing for the Chilean club Magallanes, possesses a unique connection to Wales. Born in Trelew, a city within Argentina’s Chubut province that was established by Welsh settlers in 1886, James represents the fifth generation of his family to reside in the area.
The region of Patagonia has served as a Welsh enclave since 1865, when roughly 160 emigrants arrived seeking to preserve their cultural and religious identity away from English influence. Today, over 50,000 residents in the area maintain Welsh ancestry, and the language remains in active use.
James’s personal journey has been marked by resilience. At nine years old, he overcame a leukemia diagnosis before beginning his football career at the San Lorenzo academy. He later played for various clubs in the Argentine Primera Division before moving to his current team in Chile.
