The Federal University Dutse (FUD) has officially dismissed accusations regarding the firing of Dr. Ramla Muhammad Kamal. The institution maintains that because the case is being heard in the Federal High Court, it will follow the judicial outcome. Abdullahi Yahaya Bello, the university’s acting public relations director, stated that the academic’s claims regarding unfair dismissal and defamation lack merit and that internal protocols were strictly observed.
Dr. Kamal joined the Department of Pharmacology in May 2018. She was later granted a paid, self-sponsored study fellowship at Universiti Putra Malaysia, signing a bond that required her to return and serve the institution after completion. While FUD extended her leave until late 2022, the university claims she did not report back as required.
A 2024 staff audit prompted the university to recall her, but she requested a suspension of her bond obligations, which was denied. Following a formal query, Dr. Kamal stated she was in the United States waiting for residency papers. Despite being offered chances to attend committee hearings virtually, she reportedly did not engage with the Senior Staff Disciplinary Committee after two invitations. Consequently, the university demanded the repayment of over N16 million in salary paid during her extended absence.
Regarding public announcements about her status, FUD asserted these were standard administrative actions protected by law. The university has filed an objection to the court’s jurisdiction in the current lawsuit, where Dr. Kamal is seeking N120 million in damages. The administration reaffirmed its commitment to the rule of law and declined further public comment while the litigation proceeds.
