New York authorities have apprehended the operator of a vessel that flipped over in New York Harbour on Saturday evening. The accident resulted in the deaths of a woman and a five-month-old infant. The operator now faces charges of reckless endangerment.
Following the disaster, a significant search and rescue effort was initiated. Emergency crews, including multiple Coast Guard, police, and fire department vessels, along with a police helicopter, successfully pulled twelve individuals from the water. U.S. Coast Guard Captain Doreen McCarthy praised the quick response of partner agencies and private vessels for their assistance in saving survivors.
While the investigation continues, officials are looking into whether the boat was operating as an illegal charter. The identities of those on board and the precise factors that led to the capsizing remain under investigation.
