Aloy Ejimakor, who serves as the Special Counsel for Nnamdi Kanu, the leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), has asserted that the state subjected the separatist leader to excessive prosecution. According to Ejimakor, the Nigerian authorities effectively misled the court system to achieve this outcome.
Sharing his thoughts on X, Ejimakor clarified that the core issue was never about terrorism or treason, but rather the pursuit of Biafran sovereignty. He stated that Kanu viewed Biafra as a reaction to systemic inequality, arguing that if citizens are not treated fairly within Nigeria, they should be permitted to establish their own state. Ejimakor maintains that Kanu is a target of state overreach and expressed optimism that a resolution will emerge.
Kanu was initially taken into custody in Lagos on October 14, 2015, by the Department of State Services for his activities with Radio Biafra, facing accusations of treasonable felony. After being brought before an Abuja Magistrate Court and subsequently the Federal High Court, Justice Binta Nyako granted him bail for medical reasons in April 2017. However, Kanu fled the country following a military operation at his residence in Abia State, which resulted in the loss of his bail privileges.
In June 2021, Kanu was detained in Kenya and returned to Nigeria through extraordinary rendition. He was held by the DSS and appeared once more before the Abuja Federal High Court. Following extensive legal proceedings regarding his separatist activities, Justice James Omotosho sentenced Nnamdi Kanu to life in prison on November 20, 2025.
