Ukrainian officials have officially denied involvement in a drone explosion that occurred near the strategic Trans-Balkan gas pipeline, situated close to the Romanian border. While Bulgaria’s defense ministry noted that the drone model is commonly utilized by the Ukrainian military, Kyiv maintains it did not purposefully direct any equipment toward Bulgarian territory. Foreign ministry spokesman Georgiy Tykhyi attributed the event to the ongoing instability caused by Russia’s invasion.
The incident, which took place near the Kardam border crossing, resulted in no injuries despite the significant explosive payload detected by Bulgarian authorities. Prime Minister Rumen Radev described a blast loud enough to be heard from a distance, followed by visible black smoke. Bulgarian officials, after examining the wreckage, concluded there is currently no evidence that the crash was a deliberate act. The drone ended its flight in a sunflower field.
In response to the recurring challenge of monitoring drones in NATO airspace, Bulgaria has announced plans to enhance surveillance and increase troop presence at its borders. This event aligns with a growing pattern of drone-related incidents across Eastern Europe, including multiple incursions in Romania. Bulgarian leadership continues to emphasize a preference for diplomatic solutions over military involvement, having ceased direct aid to Kyiv earlier this year.
