Oba Abimbola Owoade, the Alaafin of Oyo, has commended the decision to grant the Oyo Passport Office full operational autonomy. Represented by High Chief Asimiyu Atanda and members of the Oyo Mesi, the monarch noted that this shift decentralizes government services, making them far more accessible to local residents.
Previously, the facility functioned under the Ibadan Passport Office, forcing citizens to commute to Ibadan or Ilorin for document processing. This independence means the Oyo office can now handle operations internally, with passports officially issued under its own name. The monarch highlighted that this change removes the financial burden and time lost on travel, as biometric capture and essential documentation are now available locally.
Beyond convenience, the Alaafin expects the office to boost the city’s economy. The influx of applicants is anticipated to drive growth for local businesses and support surrounding micro-enterprises. Assistant Controller of Immigration Oladejo Taiwo David, who leads the office, credited the Alaafin and figures like Alhaji Daud Igi-Ogun for their advocacy in achieving this status. He urged citizens to utilize the local facility, promising that the newfound autonomy will result in faster, more efficient service for all applicants.
