The Lagos State Government recently identified significant damage to the structural components beneath the new bridge connecting Festac Town and Alakija in the Amuwo-Odofin area. This discovery occurred during a targeted cleanup operation aimed at clearing unauthorized activities and environmental nuisances along the Lagos-Badagry Highway, as ordered by Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu.
Commissioner for the Environment and Water Resources, Tokunbo Wahab, reported via X that scavengers had allegedly stripped the bridge of steel reinforcements, iron rods, and electrical cables. Officials warned that these actions jeopardize the bridge’s structural stability and public safety. In response, a midnight raid by the Rapid Response Squad and the Kick Against Indiscipline task force led to 27 arrests. The commissioner confirmed that all suspects will face prosecution.
Local residents have strongly criticized the destruction, though some suggest the government must also create economic opportunities to deter people from such criminal desperation. The situation mirrors previous vandalism incidents on the Third Mainland Bridge, where safety installations and lighting were repeatedly targeted. Government officials are now emphasizing the need for heightened vigilance and more robust protection measures for public assets across the state.
