Wes Streeting has voiced deep dismay following allegations of sexual violence and rape involving young female recruits at the Army Foundation College (AFC) in Harrogate. The claims, which describe a persistent atmosphere of misogyny, were brought to light by four women who spoke with the BBC about their experiences at the North Yorkshire institution.
As the primary training ground for 16-year-old Army recruits, the AFC is a significant site for the armed forces. Data from the Ministry of Defence shows that 176 complaints regarding inappropriate sexual conduct were filed between January 2018 and June 2025. Furthermore, North Yorkshire Police reported 16 incidents related to sexual offences at the facility in the year leading up to June, covering charges such as voyeurism and assault.
Streeting emphasized the need for a thorough investigation into the failures at Harrogate and committed to a broader reform of military culture to ensure female personnel are treated with dignity. The Army stated that criminal actions have no place within its ranks and encouraged any individuals who have suffered or witnessed such incidents to report them.
Calls for an independent inquiry have gained momentum, with former MP Sarah Atherton and MP Emma Lewell highlighting the gravity of the situation. One victim, identifying herself as Tilly, recounted being raped by multiple fellow soldiers during her time at the college, describing a harrowing experience that lasted for hours.
