Arday, who recently resigned from his faculty positions at the University of Cambridge, faces serious allegations regarding plagiarism and the potential falsification of his academic credentials. Professor Priyamvada Gopal, a key voice in the call for an inquiry, argued that Cambridge is facing substantial reputational damage. She emphasized that the university should not be left to manage the internal review process alone, suggesting a panel composed of external experts to ensure transparency. The university has already confirmed it is reviewing new information related to Arday’s background.
The controversy originated with claims from US-based researcher Nathan Cofnas, who utilized plagiarism detection tools to flag discrepancies in Arday’s PhD dissertation. While Liverpool John Moores University previously cleared Arday of academic misconduct, describing any errors as honest oversights, questions persist regarding other claims on his CV. Reports indicate that several institutions have denied Arday held the academic positions he claimed.
Arday has maintained that he did not act dishonestly, pointing to his neurodivergence and early career struggles as factors in his past work. He has also characterized the scrutiny as racially motivated. Meanwhile, broader discussions continue regarding the Metropolitan Police’s decision to investigate a journalist who had been examining these claims, an action the force later apologized for after pressure mounted.
