Professional footballer Ivan Toney has been formally charged with assault resulting in actual bodily harm. The Metropolitan Police confirmed the charge was filed on July 31, stemming from an occurrence at a nightclub in London’s Soho area on December 6 of last year.
Currently signed with the Saudi Pro League team Al-Ahli, the 30-year-old athlete is scheduled for a court appearance at Westminster Magistrates’ Court on September 24. Previous reports from The Sun indicated that Toney, a member of the England national team during their recent World Cup campaign, was arrested following allegations of a headbutt.
A representative for the striker stated that Toney recognizes the charge. The spokesperson added that while the player is surprised by the development, he is prepared to contest the allegation and seek to resolve the matter in a legal setting.
