The Federal Government has promised to bolster its partnership with Lagos State to address ongoing flooding and improve water infrastructure. This commitment was voiced by the Minister of Water Resources and Sanitation, Prof. Joseph Utsev, during a meeting with Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu at Lagos House.
Minister Utsev highlighted that the 2026 Annual Flood Outlook from the Nigeria Hydrological Services Agency lists Lagos as one of the 33 states at high risk for flood events. He emphasized the necessity of using early warning systems and integrated water management to mitigate these hazards, which are driven by rapid urban expansion, climate change, and rising sea levels.
During the meeting, the Minister encouraged Lagos to participate in the Sustainable Urban and Rural Water Supply, Sanitation and Hygiene (SURWASH) initiative to refine governance and service delivery. He also underscored the importance of eliminating open defecation and introduced the National Water Compact, a policy designed to streamline investment and institutional reform under the Renewed Hope Agenda.
Governor Sanwo-Olu acknowledged the federal assistance and noted that Lagos faces unique environmental pressures as the nation’s commercial center. He confirmed that the state is actively working on a plan to achieve an Open Defecation Free status and remains ready to align with federal efforts to enhance infrastructure and environmental safety.
The discussion closed with both parties pledging to continue their joint efforts to improve drainage systems and urban planning, ensuring a more climate-resilient future for Lagos residents.
