The reporter, Jack Grove, was instructed by the police to cease communication with Professor Jason Arday following a complaint. During an appearance on LBC, Sir Mark conceded that the situation should have been dismissed early on as unfounded.
Professor Arday, who became Cambridge’s youngest black professor in 2023, resigned from his position on Wednesday. While he has previously rejected accusations of plagiarism, he did acknowledge that some errors occurred during his work. His resignation followed a university investigation into claims regarding his doctoral thesis and other academic materials. Arday stated that the persistent public scrutiny had taken a severe emotional toll on him and his loved ones, though he maintained that his exit should not be viewed as an admission of guilt.
The journalist, Jack Grove, who writes for Times Higher Education, reported that he was contacted by a police officer in early 2025 regarding a harassment complaint. Grove expressed shock at the police intervention, noting that he had only sent a small number of emails to the academic over several months.
