Iba Gani Adams, the Aare Ona Kakanfo of Yorubaland, alongside Oba Joel Oyatoye of Oro Kingdom and Oba Rilwan Yekini of Ora Kingdom, have called upon Nigerians living abroad to safeguard their cultural heritage as a vital step toward maintaining their identity. This appeal was made during the 10th-anniversary celebration of the Oodua Progressive Union (OPU) Canada.
Speaking on behalf of Iba Adams, Alhaji Luqman Adedire emphasized the need for unity, education, and community progress. The anniversary event served to highlight the resilience of Yoruba citizens in Canada. Iba Adams remarked that OPU Canada acts as a beacon of solidarity, noting the organization’s success in increasing the visibility of Yoruba traditions over the last ten years.
A central focus of the celebration was the OPU Canada Yoruba School, which provides instruction in the native language to younger generations. Iba Adams described the school as a sanctuary for history and values, ensuring that heritage remains vibrant in the diaspora. The union’s National Coordinator, Prince Olajide Olateru, noted that the organization has grown significantly since its inception, now spanning over 109 countries.
Prince Olateru praised the leadership of Iba Adams and honored the founding members for their dedication. During the event, the Oloro of Oro Kingdom, Oba Joel Olaniyi Oyatoye, and the Olora of Ora Kingdom, Oba Rilwan Yekini, both lauded the union for its commitment to free education and human development. Otunba Adewale Adepoju, the Baba Oodua Worldwide, concluded the event by encouraging youth to embrace their roots and prepare for future leadership roles within the community.
