Senator Orji Uzor Kalu has declared his intention to exit the All Progressives Congress should President Bola Tinubu ever act disrespectfully toward the opposition or the Catholic Church. The Abia North representative spoke on the matter during a recent appearance on Channels Television, addressing recent tensions involving John Cardinal Onaiyekan.
The former Abia State governor asserted that the President maintains a positive relationship with the Catholic faith and did not offend the bishops during their recent meeting. Kalu maintained that no apology is required from the administration, emphasizing that Tinubu is an ally of the Church rather than an adversary.
Regarding the controversy sparked by John Cardinal Onaiyekan, who claimed the bishops described Nigeria as a nation struggling with economic crisis, Kalu clarified that individual opinions should not be conflated with the official stance of the Catholic Bishops’ Conference of Nigeria. He noted that while bishops are free to share their personal views, the official communication from the conference carries more weight. Kalu concluded that he found no evidence of insults during the presidential encounter.
