Jon Daniels, the managing director of the Scarlets, has pressed the Welsh Rugby Union (WRU) to be more transparent regarding the future of professional rugby in Wales. The governing body plans to reduce the number of regional sides from four to three by the 2028 season. While Cardiff and the Dragons are slated to retain their licenses, either the Scarlets or the Ospreys will face elimination.
Daniels refuted rumors of a potential merger between the two western clubs, stating that no such plans exist. He argued that the WRU must first provide a clear explanation for why the reduction to three teams is necessary. According to Daniels, the data used to reach this decision has not been shared with the clubs, and he believes the public deserves to understand the justification for a move that will significantly impact west Wales.
He expressed confidence that Welsh rugby could sustain four teams, similar to systems in other nations. If the WRU remains committed to reducing the count, Daniels believes the logic must be presented openly for public scrutiny. He also emphasized that the Scarlets intend to fight for their survival, urging staff, players, and fans to demonstrate the club’s enduring value through their performance and commitment to the region’s heritage.
