After taking the reins in early 2020, Bubista has officially departed his role as head coach of the Cape Verde national team to manage the Moroccan side RS Berkane. The 56-year-old recently led the Blue Sharks to their inaugural World Cup appearance, where they advanced to the round of 32 before a narrow extra-time loss to tournament runners-up Argentina.
Beyond their World Cup success, Bubista’s tenure included a run to the quarter-finals of the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations. He has now committed to a two-year contract with RS Berkane, who secured second place in the Moroccan league last season. He takes over from Moin Chaabani, who recently moved to lead the Tunisian national team.
RS Berkane has steadily built a strong reputation, winning three Caf Confederation Cup titles and their first domestic league trophy in the 2024-25 season. The Cape Verde football federation expressed gratitude for his contributions during his five-year term.
Bubista’s exit is part of a broader trend of managerial changes among African nations following the World Cup. Other teams including Algeria, Ivory Coast, South Africa, and Senegal have also seen departures or contract non-renewals among their coaching staff.
