In a recent science contest held in Abia State, public school participants outshined those from private institutions. The event, which took place at the Abia State Secretariat in Umuahia, honored top-performing science educators and students, with public schools securing top honors in disciplines like Biology and Chemistry.
Afugiri Girls Secondary School in Umuahia stood out by producing the state’s top science student, Miss Ebenezer Favour Damilola, who earned over 12 separate accolades, alongside two of the best science teachers. An additional award went to an instructor from Mbala Secondary School in Isuochi, Umunneochi LGA. While public institutions dominated, Wilcox School Aba secured recognition for Daniel Eguzoro, who was named the best physics teacher, while one of the school’s students also performed exceptionally well.
Following her success, Damilola emphasized that public schools possess significant potential, provided educators receive adequate support. She advocated for better learning environments and updated equipment, encouraging her peers to overcome feelings of inadequacy and strive for excellence. Abia State Commissioner for Science, Technology and Innovation, David Kalu, stated that the event was a collaborative effort with the ASSPPA-ISBORS platform to celebrate excellence in the sciences. Patrick Ejike Ochuba, representing the organizers, noted that providing proper tools and prioritizing teacher welfare is essential for cultivating future scientific leaders, noting that the competition was held with full transparency.
