Political activist Aisha Yesufu stated on Sunday that Cardinal John Onaiyekan, the Archbishop Emeritus of the Catholic Diocese of Abuja, consistently speaks honestly to government officials. Yesufu identified him as a rare religious figure who remains aligned with the needs of the Nigerian public.
Sharing her thoughts on the social media platform X, Yesufu emphasized that the Cardinal is unafraid to hold those in authority accountable. Her remarks follow a publicized disagreement between the Cardinal and the Presidency. During a recent meeting at the Presidential Villa in Abuja, Onaiyekan led the Catholic Bishops Conference of Nigeria to discuss significant national issues, including economic instability and insecurity.
Following this meeting, Onaiyekan reported during an interview on Arise Television’s Prime Time program that President Bola Tinubu rejected the bishops’ critique of his policies. While the delegation expressed serious concerns about the current political and economic climate, the President insisted that his administration is effectively improving the nation’s economy.
