Chelsea Targeting Giorgio Scalvini Following Danny Welbeck Signing

Following the acquisition of striker Danny Welbeck, Chelsea is aggressively pursuing Atalanta defender Giorgio Scalvini despite interest from Tottenham and Newcastle.

Chelsea has officially signed veteran striker Danny Welbeck from Brighton on a two-year deal, marking him as the fourth arrival of the summer. The 35-year-old joins the club following previous stints at Manchester United and Arsenal. He joins recent additions Morgan Rogers, Maxence Lacroix, and Marco Palestra under new head coach Xabi Alonso.

The club is now pivoting to sign 22-year-old Atalanta defender Giorgio Scalvini. Having played over 100 matches for his club and winning the 2024 Europa League, Scalvini has become a prime target for the Blues. Atalanta is reportedly holding out for a transfer fee of at least £42 million for the young defender.

Chelsea faces stiff competition for Scalvini from Tottenham and Newcastle United. Tottenham’s interest stems from the impending £34 million departure of Cristian Romero to Inter Milan. Despite the competition, Scalvini is reportedly eager to advance his career in the English top flight.

With the recent addition of Lacroix, Chelsea currently holds ten central defenders. Xabi Alonso intends to reduce this number, with Trevoh Chalobah nearing a move to Como, and Axel Disasi and Benoit Badiashile also expected to depart. Welbeck, coming off a 13-goal season, remains highly motivated to succeed at Stamford Bridge.
