The Ogoni Liberation Initiative (OLI) has stated that the primary issue facing Ogoniland is rampant insecurity, not the potential return of oil exploration. Dr. Fabeke Douglas, the head of OLI, criticized certain regional leaders for prioritizing industrial activity while local residents face severe threats to their personal safety and economic stability.
Douglas argued that attempts to highlight these dangers are frequently ignored or met with aggression by those profiting from the chaos. He specifically criticized the local government leadership in Tai and Eleme for failing to safeguard their citizens. According to the OLI leader, criminal groups have effectively displaced farmers, particularly within the Ban-Ogoi Special Unit in Tai, preventing residents from working their land.
Highlighting the severity of the crisis, Douglas noted that he has faced intimidation for speaking out. He urged local chairmen to intervene immediately to prevent further escalation. Furthermore, he called on Ogoni stakeholders to unify their efforts, suggesting that a collective approach is the only way to successfully address the persistent security threats. He also noted a recent productive discussion with KAGOTE President, Chief Lesi Maol, expressing optimism for future cooperation.
