The Lagos State Government has issued payments exceeding N3.1 billion to over 300 individuals whose land was claimed for state-led infrastructure development. Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu distributed the funds during a ceremony in Alausa, Ikeja, alongside his deputy, Dr. Obafemi Hamzat. The governor emphasized that these payments represent a legal duty to protect the rights of citizens impacted by public works.
Sanwo-Olu clarified that this initiative is based on fairness rather than charity. Each claim underwent a rigorous process involving property valuation and document verification to ensure payments reached the rightful owners. These acquired lands are reserved for projects intended to enhance the quality of life for Lagosians, and the governor confirmed they will not be used for private gain.
Recipients were encouraged to invest the money in long-term, sustainable ventures. Additionally, the Lands Bureau remains open to assist residents with documentation without requesting illegal fees. Deputy Governor Hamzat noted that while property acquisition is sometimes necessary for growth, the administration is dedicated to complying with the law.
Kamar Olowoshago, the Permanent Secretary of the Lands Bureau, highlighted that this payout is part of a broader commitment to accountability. Hon. Olayinka Kazeem, chairman of the House of Assembly Committee on Lands, praised the effort for prioritizing citizen welfare alongside urban expansion.
