The Transmission Company of Nigeria (TCN) has acknowledged spending N1.28 billion on solar streetlight installations that fall beyond its usual operational scope. This confirmation came through a Saturday statement released by the company’s spokesperson, Ndidi Mbah.
The announcement addresses recent reports regarding payments made in May and June 2026. TCN explained that while these projects are not part of its standard remit, they were included as constituency projects within the government’s 2026 Appropriation Act. The company clarified that it did not propose these projects; rather, they were added to its capital budget by the National Assembly.
TCN stated that the federal government appointed it as the implementing agency for these specific tasks. The company emphasized that the money originated from federal appropriations authorized by the President, rather than from TCN’s own internally generated funds. While the firm maintains that its primary objective remains bulk electricity transmission, it is obligated to fulfill government-assigned projects when directed.
