Candidates mentioned as viable replacements include CONCACAF leader Victor Montagliani and Paris Saint-Germain president Nasser Al-Khelaifi. European football officials are leading the charge, coordinating with organizations like the English FA to find a suitable replacement.
Infantino’s standing has weakened considerably following a failed attempt to sell a share of the World Cup to private interests. This initiative faced widespread opposition from European, North American, and Asian football governing bodies, ultimately leading to the plan’s collapse. This misstep, originally intended to solidify his path to a fourth term, now appears to be a catalyst for his potential departure.
The push to replace Infantino is gaining momentum. Options being considered include pressuring him to resign voluntarily or triggering an emergency congress, which would require the backing of 43 out of 211 FIFA member associations to hold a vote of no confidence. Alternatively, UEFA could focus on backing a rival candidate. UEFA head Aleksander Ceferin has already begun urging federations that previously supported Infantino to withdraw their endorsements.
