The Catholic Diocese of Otukpo in Benue State has confirmed that Kelvin Ochai, a seminarian who was kidnapped by armed men in Asa III, Otukpo, on July 29, 2026, has been recovered safely.
Ochai managed to break free from his captors on the night of Friday, July 31. He traveled to Aliade in the Gwer East Local Government Area, where he eventually reunited with his family, sustaining no physical injuries. Very Rev. Fr. Joseph Itodo, the Chancellor of the Diocese, credited his safe return to divine grace and the collective prayers of the faithful.
Most Rev. Michael Ekwoyi Apochi, the Bishop of Otukpo, extended his sincere thanks to the clergy, the lay faithful, and members of the public who supported the seminarian during his ordeal. The Bishop also acknowledged the vital assistance provided by Rev. Fr. Vitalis Ioryue, the congregation at Saints Peter and Paul Parish in Aliade, and the Nigeria Police Force.
The Diocese concluded its statement by offering prayers for others currently held captive throughout Nigeria. They urged the public to join them in seeking divine protection and the restoration of peace and justice across the nation.
