Nyesom Wike, the current Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, recently argued that Governor Siminalayi Fubara made a significant error by attempting to establish a personal political structure shortly after taking office on May 29, 2023. Wike suggested that this move alienated the allies and political framework that were responsible for the governor’s rise to power.
Speaking during a media event in Port Harcourt, Wike explained that he had intended for Fubara to continue the developmental momentum established during his own tenure as governor. Specifically, Wike noted his desire for the state to emulate Lagos by focusing on infrastructure, such as the Port Harcourt Ring Road and the 12 flyovers he commissioned. Wike claimed that instead of building upon this foundation, Fubara allowed outside influences to steer him toward conflict.
Wike dismissed rumors that his disagreement with the governor stemmed from financial demands. He stated that his position as FCT Minister provides him with sufficient resources, making such allegations baseless. Instead, he attributed the friction to the governor being misled by individuals who did not want him to succeed. Ultimately, Wike characterized the governor’s attempt to operate independently of his original supporters as a fundamental loss of focus that has negatively impacted the progress of Rivers State.
