The National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS) has urged the University of Lagos (UNILAG) to restore access to its tuition and registration portal for 48 hours. NANS warns that the current closure puts numerous students at risk of missing upcoming exams and potentially forfeiting an entire academic year.
In an official statement, NANS President Akinteye Afeez labeled the June 21 portal shutdown as poorly timed and inconsiderate, given that examinations are not set to start until August 10. The association contends that closing the system seven weeks early unfairly prevents students from securing the necessary funds during a period of severe national economic instability.
NANS emphasized that this administrative action contradicts government initiatives like the Nigerian Education Loan Fund (NELFUND), which aim to reduce financial hurdles for students. They argue that while the university holds administrative authority over its registration procedures, such power should be applied with empathy given current hardships.
The organization is calling for a brief final extension to allow those still struggling to finalize their financial obligations. By reopening the system, the university can prevent unnecessary academic disruption. NANS concluded by reiterating its dedication to ensuring that financial challenges do not become a barrier to higher education for Nigerian students.
