A high-profile gathering of Delta Central APC leaders at the PTI Conference Centre in Effurun descended into chaos last Sunday. While the formal meeting inside concluded peacefully, a violent altercation broke out at an adjacent bar, involving political associates and leaving several individuals injured.
Simon Mudi, a senior aide to Governor Sheriff Oborevwori, suffered severe head injuries after being attacked with glass bottles. The brawl also affected Uvwie Local Government Chairman Tony Ofoni and Commissioner for Works Rueben Izeze. Witnesses suggest the confrontation was the latest manifestation of a long-standing personal and political rivalry between Mudi and Izeze, stemming from disputes over local party nominations.
Although the state APC officially denied the violence, claiming the footage of the fight was unrelated to their proceedings, critics and local advocates have dismissed this as a cover-up. The state government has formally condemned the attack, with Commissioner Charles Aniagwu calling for a thorough investigation and the prosecution of those responsible.
Questions regarding security failures have emerged, as police officers were reportedly present on-site during the incident. In response, local leaders from the Ughievwen sub-clan have formed a peace committee to mediate the conflict and prevent further hostilities, highlighting the internal pressures facing the party ahead of the 2027 elections.
