Welsh cyclists Emma Finucane and Anna Morris secured victories against England at the Commonwealth Games in Glasgow, highlighting a successful start for Wales at the Sir Chris Hoy Velodrome. Finucane captured her second gold medal in two days by winning the team sprint final against Sophie Capewell. Meanwhile, Morris triumphed over Josie Knight to win the 4,000m individual pursuit.
Finucane, a 23-year-old from Carmarthen, established a new Games record of 10.322 seconds during qualification. Her performance marks her as the first Welsh woman to earn two golds at a single Commonwealth Games since Kirsty Wade in 1986. She remains scheduled to compete in the time trial and keirin events.
For Anna Morris, the path to gold was demanding. A trained doctor who began cycling late, Morris secured the pursuit title with a time of 4:24:272. Although she initially finished second in the scratch race, she was later relegated to fifth place due to a lane violation. Despite this setback, her performance underscored her status as a world champion. Together with Rhian Edmunds, who claimed a surprise bronze in the sprint, the Welsh team has collected six medals within the first two nights of competition.
