Fifa president Gianni Infantino currently faces significant instability following a period of intense scrutiny. Although he was visible throughout the recent World Cup, support for his leadership has rapidly deteriorated. Major governing bodies, including Uefa, Concacaf, and the AFC, have publicly criticized his management, citing deep-seated issues with decision-making processes. The resignation of special advisor Carlos Cordeiro and claims that Fifa administration was misled regarding certain projects have further isolated the president.
While some experts like former Football Association chairman David Bernstein suggest such pressure would typically end a leader’s tenure, others believe Infantino may retain enough backing to secure his next four-year term. Since taking office in 2016, Infantino has faced little opposition in elections, a trend he expected to continue next March.
Several figures are often discussed as potential successors should a vacancy arise. Victor Montagliani, the president of Concacaf, has deep experience in governance reform and international relations. Sheikh Salman bin Ebrahim Al Khalifa, the AFC president, has also overseen substantial growth within his confederation and has shown a willingness to challenge current management. Nasser Al-Khelaifi, who leads the European Football Clubs, holds significant influence, though sources suggest he has no desire for the position. Finally, Fifa secretary general Mattias Grafstrom, a long-term associate of Infantino, is viewed as an influential voice, though his close ties to the incumbent might hinder a bid.
Candidates for the upcoming election must formalize their interest by November 18, with a final decision expected at the 77th Fifa Congress in Morocco next spring.
