Peter Obi, the presidential candidate for the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC) ahead of the 2027 general elections, asserts that citizens hold the ultimate responsibility for ensuring electoral integrity. He maintains that the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) will ultimately reflect the collective will of the voters.
Addressing reporters in Ebonyi State following the funeral of Pa Simon Okorie Abaa, Obi stated that his faith in the electoral process rests on the resolve of the people to protect their ballots rather than relying solely on the commission. He emphasized that if the public demands accountability and ensures their votes count, the system will be forced to respond accordingly.
Obi expressed deep concern regarding the nation’s economic decline, noting that widespread poverty and extreme hunger are visible across villages, impacting millions of citizens. He argued that the current state of affairs is unsustainable and that the nation requires a significant shift. Regarding potential political intimidation, he remarked that the true harassment currently facing Nigerians is the systemic economic hardship affecting the entire population.
During his visit to Onicha Local Government Area, the former Anambra State governor also reflected on his long-standing professional ties with Chief Linus Okorie, the NDC senatorial candidate for Ebonyi South. He offered his condolences to the family, expressing his hope that they find strength during this difficult time.
