Hamas declared on Friday that it has accepted a proposal from U.S. President Donald Trump to conclude the conflict with Israel. The agreement involves the militant group surrendering its weaponry to a Palestinian committee, alongside a staggered pullout of Israeli military forces from Gaza.
Israel has not issued an immediate formal statement. However, prior to the announcement, an Israeli political insider informed AFP that the proposal failed to adequately address Jerusalem’s core requirement for the total demilitarization of the Gaza Strip. The source further noted that the Gaza situation was not discussed during Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s recent visit to Washington.
Hamas representatives stated that a committee created by Trump’s Board of Peace will manage the disarmament process and the storage of the group’s arsenal. Ghazi Hamad, a Hamas negotiator, emphasized that the group is making these concessions to shield civilians from further death and displacement, adding that the National Committee for Administration of Gaza will handle disarmament rather than Israel.
The Board of Peace confirmed via social media that the roadmap for the next stages of the ceasefire is active. President Trump outlined a plan where Israeli forces will depart as an international force assists a new Palestinian police unit. Nickolay Mladenov, the Board’s representative, stressed that the coming weeks of implementation and verification are crucial. Meanwhile, Egyptian state media reports that mediators from the U.S., Qatar, Turkey, and Egypt will meet to discuss the next steps in the truce.
