FIFA Defends Commercial Plan Against Threats of Boycott

FIFA insists it is not selling the sport following threats from UEFA and other confederations to boycott tournaments over a new private investment proposal.

FIFA has responded to strong resistance from UEFA and other confederations regarding its plan to introduce private investment into the World Cup. The organization emphasized that it is not privatizing the sport, despite threats from European football leadership to pull out of FIFA competitions.

In a formal statement on Friday, FIFA confirmed it is continuing discussions about the FIFA Forward Enterprise (FFE). This new commercial entity is intended to manage the World Cup and other tournaments. FIFA leadership noted they are listening to the feedback from various confederations and remain dedicated to a democratic, transparent process where every member association can vote based on the facts.

Addressing claims that the sport is being sold, FIFA denied such intentions, stating that the initiative aims to help all 211 member associations gain from the financial expansion of the game without undermining sports governance. The body also clarified that no final decision has been reached and the project will require majority support from members to move forward.

This pushback follows a unanimous vote by UEFA’s 55 member associations to boycott FIFA events if the organization pursues selling a minority stake to private investors. Both CONCACAF and the Asian Football Confederation have also voiced disapproval regarding the lack of consultation. The proposal, spearheaded by FIFA president Gianni Infantino and potentially involving the investment firm Thrive Eternal, remains under review as FIFA pledges to continue its dialogue with member nations.
