Todd Greenberg, the chief executive of Cricket Australia, believes that Australia and England should consider hosting Test matches in India to boost the sport’s global reach. Currently, the two nations primarily face each other during the rotating home-and-away Ashes series. While a one-off match is scheduled for Melbourne in 2027 to mark the 150th anniversary of their rivalry, Greenberg suggests expanding into the massive Indian market could be highly beneficial.
Such an initiative would require cooperation from the England and Wales Cricket Board and the Board of Control for Cricket in India. Greenberg noted that while there are no immediate plans, the option remains on the table as a way to capitalize on strong existing partnerships. Cricket Australia is already testing the Indian market by moving a Big Bash League game to Chennai this December.
Regarding the upcoming 150th-anniversary match, Greenberg defended the decision to utilize a day-night format with a pink ball. Despite criticism from traditionalists, he argued that the scheduling is necessary to maximize broadcast audiences in the UK and attendance in Australia. Additionally, he emphasized that the organization is working to ensure the Melbourne Cricket Ground provides a more balanced pitch compared to previous encounters, aiming to deliver a better spectacle for fans.
