Approximately 300 senior students at Government Girls Secondary School in Janbulo, Kano State, avoided injury on Thursday when the staircase providing access to their classrooms gave way. The event occurred around 1:00 p.m. while the students were inside two upstairs rooms.
School principal Hajiya Jamila Mustafa Mai Nasara stated that teachers heard distress calls and acted quickly to secure a ladder, enabling them to evacuate all trapped students without any casualties. The school has formally alerted the Kano State Secondary Schools Management Board regarding the structural failure.
Mai Nasara expressed deep concern, noting that these classrooms supported nearly 30 percent of the school’s science students. With the institution already facing severe overcrowding—often housing over 120 students per room—the loss of this space exacerbates an existing shortage of facilities. The school currently operates with only eight classrooms, a number now reduced to four following the collapse.
The affected structure was built 16 years ago and has suffered from long-term neglect, including persistent roof leaks. The principal is calling on the Kano State government to repair the damage before the new academic term begins in September to avoid denying students access to education due to lack of space. The Kano State Ministry of Education has yet to comment on the matter.
