Emma Finucane, Lowri Thomas, and Rhian Edmunds secured the first gold medal for Team Wales, dominating the women’s team sprint. After setting a new Commonwealth Games record during the qualifying round, the trio successfully defended their pace in the final to overcome a strong English squad. For Finucane, who celebrated the victory while singing the national anthem, the result represented the culmination of intense preparation.
Para-cyclist James Ball, paired with guide Matt Rotherham, added a silver medal to the Welsh tally in the men’s B tandem 1,000m time trial. This achievement marks Ball’s third consecutive podium finish in this specific event at the Commonwealth Games, further cementing his status as a world-class competitor.
Meanwhile, Ciara Oliva enjoyed a successful return to professional racing, contributing to a bronze medal victory in the women’s team pursuit alongside Megan Barker, Jessica Roberts, and Anna Morris. Despite the success, the day concluded on a difficult note for the Oliva family. Her husband, Lewis, was prevented from competing in his own bronze medal sprint race due to the sudden illness and late withdrawal of his teammate, Ioan Hepburn.
While the men’s team pursuit squad also missed out on a medal after a loss to New Zealand, the Welsh cycling contingent remains optimistic about their prospects for the remainder of the competition, with several additional events scheduled over the coming days.
