Participants in the upcoming Osun State governorship race, along with their respective political parties, officially signed a peace agreement on Thursday. This pact seeks to foster a secure, transparent, and fair electoral environment for the August 15 vote.
The ceremony was organized by the National Peace Committee, headed by Bishop Matthew Kukah, and held at the Oasis Event Centre in Osogbo. Governor Ademola Adeleke appeared personally, while other key contenders opted for representation. The All Progressives Congress candidate, Bola Oyebamiji, sent his running mate, Engr. Kayode Adereti, and media director, Kola Olabisi. The African Democratic Congress representative was the party chairman, Azeez Adesiji.
General Martins Agwai, representing the National Peace Committee chairman, General Abdulsalami Abubakar, called on all involved parties to prioritize stability over partisan goals. He stressed that maintaining law and order during campaigns is essential, warning against hate speech and violence. General Agwai emphasized that no political win justifies the sacrifice of human life.
Bishop Matthew Kukah noted that the signatures represent a starting point and challenged the candidates to remain true to their promises. He further asked the Independent National Electoral Commission to maintain impartiality and urged security forces to execute their duties with fairness and transparency.
