Former Secretary to the Government of the Federation, Babachir Lawal, has openly challenged the leadership tactics of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu. In a recent interview, Lawal suggested that the President has moved away from the inclusive and fiscally responsible governance he once championed as governor of Lagos State.
Lawal recalled that during his time as Lagos governor, Tinubu cultivated a diverse cabinet that included individuals from various ethnic groups. He expressed concern that the President has now narrowed his focus, favoring people from his inner circle and prioritizing projects centered in Lagos. Lawal argued that this shift has resulted in federal infrastructure developments and appointments being heavily concentrated among the President’s personal associates.
Furthermore, the former SGF criticized the current administration for allegedly undermining political opposition to push for a one-party system before the 2027 elections. He also raised alarms regarding the integrity of the judiciary, stating that the courts have seemingly surrendered their independence to the executive branch. Lawal concluded by noting that those familiar with Tinubu’s earlier political career are particularly disheartened by these recent developments.
