Laolu Akande, who previously served as a media advisor to former Vice President Yemi Osinbajo, has criticized the Nigeria Police Force for their failure to provide clear information regarding the detention of Osun State Secretary to the Government, Teslim Igbalaye. During an appearance on the Channels Television program Sunrise Daily, Akande argued that the lack of a thorough briefing has fueled public suspicion surrounding the incident.
The Osun State Police Command apprehended Igbalaye on Wednesday as part of an investigation into alleged vote-buying activities in Osogbo. Akande emphasized that because the SSG occupies the third-highest position in the state administration, the police have a responsibility to be transparent. While he acknowledged that the SSG lacks immunity from arrest, he noted that the current information provided—such as the simple mention of discovering two PVCs—is insufficient to explain the gravity of the investigation.
Akande concluded that the police have underperformed by failing to offer a comprehensive account of their actions, noting that this lack of clarity has allowed political opponents, such as the Accord Party spokesman, to openly challenge the legitimacy of the operation.
