A series of coordinated assaults in the Ugboju District of Benue State’s Otukpo Local Government Area has resulted in the deaths of at least 22 people, sparking a heated political confrontation. The violence, which impacted Efeyi-Ugboju and Ipom-Ugboju, caused numerous injuries and forced many families to flee their homes.
The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) issued a strong condemnation of the violence, criticizing Governor Hyacinth Alia for his perceived inaction. The party argued that the current administration has failed to ensure the safety of citizens, describing the response to recurring massacres as weak and ineffective. They called for enhanced security deployment and better intelligence strategies.
Chief Michael Aondoakaa, the PDP governorship candidate, joined in the criticism, accusing the state government of neglecting its protective duties. He challenged claims that the administration is effectively supporting security agencies, pointing to the ongoing regularity of attacks as evidence of failure. Aondoakaa also refuted accusations that his critiques were attempts to incite violence, asserting his right to demand government accountability.
In response, Governor Alia, represented by his Chief Press Secretary, Tersoo Kula, rejected the claims of negligence. He characterized the opposition’s rhetoric as an attempt to capitalize on a tragedy for political leverage. The Governor maintained that his administration provides consistent support to security services and urged for a unified approach to the crisis. He further called on investigators to examine whether political actors are involved in funding or inciting the instability for personal gain.
