A High Court in Ogwashi-Uku, Delta State, has issued a death sentence by hanging for Desmond Macaulay Oghenemaro and Enaike Onoriode. The two men were convicted for the 2018 murder of Elozino Ogege, who was a student at Delta State University in Abraka. While the court ruled against these two, it cleared the second defendant, Nwonsisi Benedict Uche, of all eight charges brought against him.
Presided over by Hon. Justice F. N. Azinge, the ruling was finalized on Thursday, July 29. Records indicate that a herbalist previously linked to the case, who had allegedly instructed the suspects to harvest human parts for ritualistic wealth, passed away while in detention. The trial spanned eight years, following the brutal incident where the victim was found with her eyes removed and heart mutilated.
The prosecution was directed by the Solicitor-General of Delta State, Omamuzo Erebe, SAN. Following the verdict, Comrade Kelvin Ejumudo, the Senior Special Assistant on Human Rights to the Governor of Delta State, praised the court’s decision. He described the outcome as a triumph for the public, stating that the long wait did not diminish the achievement of justice. Ejumudo also expressed gratitude toward the legal team, the police, the media, and citizens who campaigned for accountability throughout the proceedings.
