Fifty-four years have passed since the unexpected death of Nigerian football icon Teslim ‘Thunder’ Balogun in Ibadan. His son, Kayode Balogun, describes the passing of the 45-year-old athlete as an enduring mystery. While the circumstances remain unclear, Kayode is urging the federal and Lagos state governments to safeguard his father’s historical impact.
Kayode recounted the final hours of the legendary striker, noting that he returned home in high spirits the night before his death. The following morning, his mother discovered the footballer unresponsive in his bed. Despite medical intervention, he was pronounced dead. Balogun, who was married to former table tennis player Alhaja Mulikat Abike Balogun, had a storied career that included stints at Queens Park Rangers and Peterborough United in England. He was a key member of the famous UK Tourists and dominated the local scene, winning the Governor’s Challenge Cup five times.
Beyond his playing days, Balogun made history as the first African to qualify as a professional football coach. Following a request from Chief Obafemi Awolowo, he returned to Nigeria to elevate the standard of the sport, eventually guiding the national team to the 1968 Summer Olympics. He also played a vital role in mentoring prominent coaches such as Adegboye Onigbinde and Jossy Lad. Another of his children, Engineer Olamide Balogun, fondly remembers him as a deeply involved and affectionate father.
While the Lagos state government honored him by naming the Surulere multi-purpose stadium in his memory, his family feels that the facility is currently underutilized. Kayode emphasizes that the government must revitalize the arena to ensure that his father’s contributions to Nigerian sports continue to inspire future generations.
