The Ohanaeze Youth Council (OYC) has expressed strong disapproval regarding the failure of Southeast governors and regional National Assembly members to attend the 60th memorial anniversary of Major-General Thomas Aguiyi-Ironsi. The event, held in Umuahia, Abia State, was attended by Governor Alex Otti, but other regional leaders notably failed to appear.
OYC President Igboayaka O. Igboayaka labeled the absence of leaders including governors Hope Uzodimma, Francis Nwifuru, Peter Mbah, and Charles Soludo as shocking. He suggested that if the late military head of state were from a different ethnic background, regional leadership would have prioritized the event. Igboayaka argued that this lack of presence indicates a significant deficit in unity among Igbo political officials.
The council further urged these leaders to show greater commitment to the Igbo cause by supporting events that foster regional cohesion. According to the OYC, the consistent absence of these officials from commemorations like the Biafra heroes memorial and the Aguiyi-Ironsi anniversary reflects a troubling disregard for regional historical significance.
