Kate O’Connor has secured a landmark victory, becoming the first Northern Irish athlete to win a Commonwealth Games gold medal since 1986. Following a series of podium finishes in 2025, the 25-year-old entered the 2026 Glasgow Games with the clear ambition of clinching the top spot. She ultimately triumphed in the heptathlon with a total of 6,569 points, finishing significantly ahead of England’s Jade O’Dowda.
The competition was far from straightforward. O’Connor faced challenging weather conditions during the opening day, particularly struggling during the shot put in heavy rain. However, she demonstrated significant mental toughness, rebounding with a strong performance in the 200m. She continued her momentum on the second day with season-best marks in the javelin and a strong showing in the long jump, before securing her win with a disciplined 800m run.
Reflecting on her performance, O’Connor noted that while the shot put was a hurdle, she was pleased with her overall execution. Having successfully managed the high expectations surrounding her entry into the event, she is now turning her focus toward the upcoming European Championships in mid-August. She aims to continue her growth as a competitor while learning to embrace the pressure of being an athlete others look to challenge.
