Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu appeared in court on Tuesday to testify in his long-running corruption trial.

Netanyahu, who faces charges of bribery, fraud, and breach of trust, had previously been granted delays for his court appearances due to the ongoing war in Gaza. However, a recent court ruling required him to begin testifying.

Netanyahu will testify three times a week, despite the ongoing conflict and the potential for further regional instability. While Netanyahu was in court, protesters gathered outside, urging him to focus on securing the release of around 100 hostages held by Hamas in Gaza.

Netanyahu was indicted in 2019 on charges related to receiving expensive gifts from wealthy friends and allegedly seeking regulatory favors from media tycoons in exchange for positive coverage.

He has consistently denied any wrongdoing, describing the investigations as a politically motivated “witch hunt.” Netanyahu has pleaded not guilty to the charges and continues to maintain his innocence as he faces trial.

“The real threat to democracy in Israel is not posed by the public’s elected representatives, but by some among the law enforcement authorities who refuse to accept the voters’ choice and are trying to carry out a coup with rabid political investigations that are unacceptable in any democracy,” he said in a statement on Thursday.

Netanyahu’s courtroom appearances come during a tumultuous period as Israel deals with ongoing war against Hamas, which began following an attack on October 7, 2023. At a press conference, Netanyahu expressed frustration over the eight-year delay in testifying and criticized the treatment of witnesses during the investigations.

His government is also addressing threats from neighboring countries like Syria and dealing with the consequences of a ceasefire with Hezbollah, an ally of Hamas.
