A joint task force has successfully saved nine individuals from captivity and killed three gunmen during a mission in Kwara State’s Ekiti Local Government Area. The rescue effort occurred near the Obbo-Aiyegunle, Ejiu-Ora, and Osi regions, which share borders with Niger and Ekiti states.
Prince Dada Sunday, press secretary for the Ekiti LGA Chairman, confirmed that the operation involved Kwara State Forest Guards, DSS agents, and local security volunteers. The victims were seized from Eju community following a market day and were being transported through forest trails toward Niger State when the security team intervened.
Umaru Muazu, one of the freed victims, recalled being accosted by armed men who threatened him at gunpoint before seizing him and his son. Other captives, including farmer Ibrahim Danga, confirmed the swift arrival of the security forces. Owolabi Adebayo of the Kwara Forest Guards noted that the team engaged the suspects during an intelligence-led patrol, leaving one victim requiring medical care for injuries.
Adebayo urged for improved gear, citing the advanced weaponry held by the bandits. Meanwhile, Ekiti LGA’s Chief Security Officer, Agbemuko Gabriel, praised the forest guards for their persistent efforts in monitoring the border regions. Following these events, the federal government reiterated its commitment to stabilizing the area, with President Bola Ahmed Tinubu previously authorizing a new Army battalion for Kwara South to enhance regional security.
