Russell T Davies reflects on the passing of his spouse, calling it his most profound loss

Screenwriter Russell T Davies discusses the loss of his husband, Andrew Smith, who passed away in 2018 after an eight-year battle with a malignant brain tumour.

Renowned screenwriter Russell T Davies has openly discussed the death of his husband, Andrew Smith, labelling the tragedy his greatest loss. Speaking on the On the Marie Curie Couch podcast, Davies shared details about Smith’s eight-year struggle with glioblastoma multiforme, a lethal brain tumour, which ultimately ended in September 2018.

The pair had been a couple for two decades and entered into marriage in 2012. Davies, known for his work on shows like It’s a Sin and Tip Toe, admitted that caring for his late husband was challenging but emphasized that he would have gladly endured the hardship for five decades without complaint. He recounted how Smith initially received a prognosis of only 18 months, yet defied expectations by surviving for eight years.

Davies described the moment of diagnosis, noting that he was not present when the news was first delivered. Upon discovering a note written by a nurse in his husband’s bag, Davies researched the condition and realized the gravity of the situation. He highlighted that Smith made a conscious choice not to learn about his own prognosis, a decision that Davies believes assisted his husband throughout his treatment. The writer also expressed deep gratitude toward the Marie Curie nurses who provided end-of-life care, comparing their presence to a saintly intervention, and found solace in the fact that Smith passed away peacefully at home while holding his hand.
