Authorities in Enugu State have officially suspended Igwe Christopher Nyia, the traditional ruler of the Obeagu Ugwuaji community located in the Enugu South Council Area. The decision stems from ongoing internal conflict and accusations of serious wrongdoing directed at the monarch by local residents.
Dr. Charles Egumgbe, the Commissioner for Chieftaincy Affairs, confirmed the disciplinary action on Tuesday through a statement released by ministry spokesperson Emeka Nebeife. According to officials, the suspension was ordered by Governor Peter Mbah on July 28 to restore stability and ensure proper governance within the community.
To address the situation, the state has launched an administrative inquiry. This investigative body is tasked with uncovering the origins of the unrest and evaluating the specific conduct of the traditional ruler and other individuals linked to the disturbances. The committee has been granted a two-week window to submit their findings. This move follows a similar action taken on July 15, when the state government suspended several other traditional leaders and officials in the Ezeagu Council Area due to security concerns.
