Former Minister of State for Labour and Employment, Hon. Nkeiruka Onyejeocha, has pledged to cover the total medical costs for an infant born with an anorectal malformation. The child requires specialized surgery costing up to ₦5 million, a sum well beyond the family’s financial reach. Onyejeocha, currently hosting a week-long free medical outreach in the Isuikwuato/Umunneochi Federal Constituency, stated that no family should lose a child to poverty.
The initiative, which has operated for 19 years, recently reached the nomadic community at the Lokpanta Regional Cattle market. Onyejeocha noted that her team is authorized to refer severe cases to hospitals with the expenses billed directly to her. She emphasized that her commitment to humanitarian work predates her political career and stems from a long-standing family tradition of service.
During the event, medical professionals treated hundreds of residents, successfully performing various procedures including hernia surgeries. Community leaders from the Lokpanta market expressed gratitude for the inclusive medical care, noting that it brings essential services to marginalized groups. Onyejeocha plans to use her extensive firsthand experience with grassroots healthcare to influence future health policy reforms if she returns to the National Assembly.
