Three alleged ISWAP members recently turned themselves in to the Nigerian military’s Operation HADIN KAI forces stationed in Damasak, Borno State. Security analyst Zagazola Makama confirmed the incident, noting that persistent military pressure compelled the fighters to quit the insurgency.
The suspects—identified as 24-year-old Abba Musa Dogo, 28-year-old Abubakar Bargaji, and 16-year-old Ibrahim Abubakar—surrendered to the 5 Brigade headquarters around 4:50 p.m. on July 28. During initial questioning, they admitted to fleeing ISWAP-controlled camps in Sabon Gari and Tunbun Mota, which are led by commanders Abu Fatima and Abu Ayuba.
The men stated that relentless ground and air attacks by the Nigerian armed forces left them unable to sustain their positions. They further revealed their roles within the group as anti-aircraft gunners and gunboat operators tasked with patrolling the Lake Chad basin. The trio noted that the terrorist organization strictly rations its weaponry, issuing firearms only for specific missions. Currently, the three individuals are being held by the military for further profiling as they transition away from their past militant activities.
